Commonwealth leaders have endorsed a new action plan aimed at strengthening the rights and improving opportunities for more than 450 million persons with disabilities across the organisation’s 56 member countries.
The Commonwealth Disability Inclusion Action Plan, endorsed on November 4 during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Antigua and Barbuda, outlines measures to remove barriers to education, employment, healthcare and participation in public life.
The plan calls on member countries to strengthen legislation, policies and services to ensure persons with disabilities can participate fully and equally in society.
It addresses several priority areas, including accessibility, education, employment, access to justice, political participation and the collection and use of data disaggregated by disability to inform policy decisions.
