The British Virgin Islands’ Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports announced that the East End Public Library will be renamed the H. Lynden Smith Public Library in recognition of the former educator’s distinguished contribution to education and literacy development in the territory.

The announcement, during Reading Is Fun Week that was observed Oct. 5-9, was particularly significant for Smith. The former principal of the Willard Wheatley Primary School in East End founded both the BVI Reading Council and Reading Is Fun Week in 1992, establishing a legacy that continues to inspire a love of reading among generations of Virgin Islanders.
