The Government’s proposed upgrade of the Borough of Chaguanas to city status has been welcomed by Mayor Faaiq Mohammed. Mohammed yesterday dubbed Chaguanas “a city whose time has come”, stating that the conversation around city status has been ongoing for some time.
Residents and businesses have also welcomed plans announced at the weekend by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar to pursue city status for Chaguanas via the new Municipal Corporations (Amendment) Bill, 2026, noting continued development in the area...
He said the growth of Chaguanas is reflected in the data, citing the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), which identified Chaguanas as one of Trinidad and Tobago’s three major urban centres. The study found that the Chaguanas urban centre grew from around 39,592 people in 2000 to 61,494 in 2020, representing population growth of more than 55%, Mohammed said.
The built-up areas of Chaguanas also expanded by some 60% over the same period, the report stated.
