Grenada has joined Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean in mourning the death of legendary calypsonian Slinger Francisco, the Mighty Sparrow, with the island’s Minister for Tourism, Creative Economy and Culture describing him as one of the region’s most celebrated cultural icons.

In a condolence message issued on Sunday, Senator Adrian Thomas said Sparrow’s death was a loss to the Caribbean’s cultural community, while highlighting the special significance of his Grenadian roots.

Sparrow was born in Grand Roy, St John, Grenada, before making Trinidad and Tobago his home and the centre of his celebrated musical career.
