The National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) organized a Youth in Disaster Management training session targeting students in secondary schools, yesterday, as part of its week of activities for the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction which was observed on Monday.
During an interview with Observer media. NODS’ Public Relations Officer Midcie Francis said that most secondary schools provided names of students who attended the all-day session. The training covered various aspects of disaster management, including the National Disaster Management System, how NODS operates, and the agency’s relationship with the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA).
A popular and very important component of the training involved a practical session using very high frequency (VHF) radios. Francis explained that this is part of the national telecommunications plan because cell phones are often unreliable during disasters. Students were instructed on the use of the radios, an activity that consistently generates significant interest among young participants.
