From an economic perspective, digitalization has the potential to boost productivity and competitiveness by facilitating access to international markets and fostering innovation and efficiency in key sectors, especially if digital transformation efforts are combined with productive development policies. From a social perspective, digital technologies must promote inclusion by expanding access to social services, in addition to improving education and health. From an institutional and governance perspective, digitalization can also make public administrations more transparent and efficient by strengthening governance, citizen participation and social dialogue. Taken together, these technologies, when actually and effectively used, can act as catalysts for more productive, inclusive and sustainable development.

The concept of digitalization has been addressed by many institutions and governments, but Small Island Developing States (SIDS) face challenges in achieving comprehensive digital agendas and implementing them. There is wide consensus that further harmonization, coordination, standardization, and coherence are needed.

Digital transformation is a journey and not a destination. It is also a marathon, and not a sprint. Recognising this, Suriname needs to engage with the long-term possibilities of digital– including what they can realise for our country’s development, and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Many of the actions and activities needed to accelerate digital are also multi-year commitments – from leveraging new types of funding and partnerships, to implementing legislation and protections, and building the skills and mindsets of our population to engage with the potential that digital can offer.

Digital transformation is the use of electronic data and digital technology to transform the way we live and conduct business. It can mean attaining quality goods and services in the areas of health care, education, finance, commerce, governance, amongst others. Beyond this, it’s a cultural change that requires individuals to challenge the status quo. This may mean resisting old structures and traditional ways of doing things and venturing beyond the familiar.

The Government of Belize has launched the National Digital Agenda for Belize 2022-2025, which will create an environment for fostering a digital government. The Agenda addresses key areas of work such as improving digital infrastructure, increasing digital connectivity across Belize, training and application of new technologies.

As Dominicans, we live on the frontlines of climate change. The seeds of the devastation of Hurricane Maria grew our determination to build the first climate resilient country in the world. Since then, we continue to deploy the human, technical and financial resources needed to build our capacity and resilience. Building on Strengths: National Development Plan Curaçao, 2015-2030

This National Development Plan is based on a long-term vision of change for Curaçao in five interlocked themes – Education; Economy; Sustainability; National Identity and Good Governance – all working together to build a thriving nation. The NDP incorporates a long-term vision, it is a plan focused on the execution of those catalytic short-term initiatives, which will put Curaçao on the path towards resiliency and attainment of its long-term vision. Integration with four Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provides a framework of measurable goals and targets at a critical time of global development, rooted in local challenges.

This transformation has enormous potential to foster more transparent, accountable, efficient, responsive, and effective governments and civil society and private sector organizations, and to support the design, delivery, and assessment of sustainable development goals at a global scale. Open data is at the center of this global shift.
