Excerpt:
Trinidad and Tobago is a high-income country1 located in the Southern Caribbean, with a population of 1.4 million2. According to the Central Statistical Office’s estimates, based on 2011 census data, children accounted for 20.6 percent in 2022. In the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)3, building an understanding of the nature of child poverty and deprivation is essential to address the needs of children through appropriate programmes and policies. In particular, Target 1.2 aims to reduce by at least half the proportion of children living in poverty in all its dimensions, according to national definitions, by 2030. This study aims to assess the current situation of children and their well-being in Trinidad and Tobago by: i) analysing the deprivation incidence across different dimensions; ii) identifying the intensity of deprivation experienced; and iii) outlining the profile of the most vulnerable children (for example, geographical, demographic and socio-economic characteristics). The results presented in this report are derived from the multidimensional child poverty analysis among children aged 0 to 17 years in Trinidad and Tobago, based on the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) 2022
