This paper analyses the maritime transport industry in the Caribbean and makes nine policy recommendations that could help the region achieve sustainability and efficiency

  1. Take an integrated approach when making large strategic decisions
  2. Take a regional approach to port security
  3. Align labour market regulation to global standards
  4. Harmonize maritime transport industry legislation
  5. Consider the public benefit when investing public funds in maritime infrastructure projects
  6. Undertake collective economic, social and environmental impact studies
  7. Implement the landlord model
  8. Recognize that transshipment is not always the correct answer for every port
  9. Acknowledge that regional organizations should provide services to member governments
